What is sublimation?
In the context of textile printing, the term "sublimation" refers to a special printing technique that uses sublimation dyes. This technique is often used to print high-quality, colorful graphics on textiles such as T-shirts, sportswear, flags and banners.
The motif or graphic is printed onto a piece of paper using a special sublimation printer. The design on the paper is then transferred to the textile using a heat press.
Sublimation printing is characterized by brilliant colors, high colour accuracy and long durability. As the dyes penetrate directly into the fibers of the fabric, the printed image remains breathable and feels pleasant on the skin. Sublimation printing is only suitable for textiles with a high synthetic content, as the dyes adhere better to synthetic fibers. The proportion of synthetics must be at least 80%, otherwise the design may not adhere.
Advantages of sublimation
- Brilliant colors and high color accuracy: Sublimation dyes offer vivid and sharp colors. Printing enables precise color reproduction, which is particularly important when it comes to detailed graphics and photos.
- Long-lasting print quality: As the dyes penetrate directly into the fibers of the fabric and are firmly anchored there, the printed image remains durable and colorfast even after repeated washing and over time.
- Breathable prints: Sublimation prints feel pleasant on textiles as the colors do not sit on the surface but have penetrated the fibers. This results in breathable prints that are soft to the touch and more comfortable to wear.
Disadvantages of sublimation
- Material restrictions: Not all sportswear materials are suitable for sublimation printing, especially textiles with a synthetic content of less than 80%. Some materials cannot withstand the temperature required for the sublimation process.
- Texture of the material: Sublimation printing works best on smooth surfaces. If the material has a textured or ribbed surface, the print may not be as even or detailed.
- Limitations with dark colors: Sublimation printing is not as visible on dark materials. This could be an important factor for sportswear with dark colors and designs.
Overall, the choice of printing technique for sportswear depends on various factors, such as material, design and the desired breathability.
