What is a plotter?
A plotter is a computerized device used to create precise drawings, graphics or lettering on various materials. Unlike conventional printers that use ink or toner, a plotter often works with pens, knives or other tools to draw lines or shapes on paper, cardboard, foil, fabric or other media.
Plotting in the textile industry
In the textile industry, the term "plotting" is used in connection with the creation and application of patterns to textiles. This is the process of transferring a design or graphic onto the fabric to be cut and sewn. This step is crucial for the production of tailored clothing and allows the desired design to be transferred precisely onto the fabric.
What do you need to be able to plot?
1. cutting plotter:
You can use a cutting plotter to cut out patterns from materials such as vinyl, flex film or flock film. There are different types of cutting plotters that are suitable for different requirements.
2. computer and design software:
You will need a computer with design software to create the designs you want to plot on the textiles. Popular design programs are Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW or special software such as refinemate, which can control the cutting plotter directly and specializes in plotting.
3. materials:
Depending on the desired effect and application, you will need special materials such as flex film, flock film or transfer paper. These materials are specially designed to adhere well to textiles and are easy to cut.
4. textiles:
The textiles you want to plot on should be clean and smooth. T-shirts, hoodies, caps and other garments made of cotton or other suitable materials are a popular choice.
5. heat press:
To permanently transfer the plotted design to the textile, you will need a heat press or an iron. The heat press enables an even and controlled transfer of the design to the textile.
